My Friend’s Wife

There was a group of us, all of us excited and in various states of happy places, walking through the night streets from one place to another. I’ve known her a long time now and even photographed her as a bride. Tonight she wanted none of it, constantly hiding her face with her hands from me and my camera. I assumed it was a playful avoidance, but I’ll never really know. She was excitedly telling a story as we approached a cross walk with our green light. She was directly to the left and slightly in front of me and followed the rest of the group into the street to cross.

As she turned towards the group and stepped off the curb, I made an image similar to this one about the same time I noticed a large white van with flashing lights coming right at us… then I heard it’s siren. It was not going to stop and it was not going to avoid us. My left arm was free and the closest to her. I grabbed her bag strap and pulled her out of the way, close enough that my arm then went around her waist and I didn’t stop pulling her out of that white van’s way till we were almost back up on the curb.

I’ve done similar things before at awkward streetlights and always, always, always overreacted, once so bad I never lived it down.

This time, this night, I did not overreact.

Unexpected Angels

24s video – touch image to watch & listen

I ran to the hotel window every few moments for 43 minutes while they made their turns to head back at one another outside of my view… They had woken me and I had no idea this was to happen, it was as random as any other plane in the sky yet of course these weren’t any other planes.

The sound of these types of jets is distinct and somehow it brings me great comfort every time I hear them fly around up there in the sky above me. It has for 20 years.

3 Meals With My Parents in 24h

I visited my parents recently, they took me out to eat, often and I liked that – I grew up going out to eat more then I ate at home or I ate out of a microwave. I never learned to cook, I got rid of my stove in order to fit a new bookcase for my photography books and I have a hatred of washing dishes that I do believe is unparalleled. My relationship with food is odder then yours, well, possibly.

93/7201 | 90 20mg Yellow Tablets

I have never had more then three drags on a cigarette.

I have never finished a single hard alcoholic beverage.

I have had less then maybe thirty beers my entire life, never more then two at a time.

I have never tried a single illegal drug.

I never take medicine unless it is prescribed.

The last time I was prescribed medicine I didn’t finish over half the dosage.

I was recently given a new prescription for these little yellow tablets, one a day, for a year, as my one bad habit (see here), is proving to be slowly killing me just like any of the above would, most likely even faster.

I’ve had the above little yellow tablets a week now, I have yet to take a single pill.

Chemicals as chemicals somehow bother me yet chemicals disguised as plain hamburgers, cupcakes or pasta somehow I choose to celebrate.

The Little Boy on the Plane

2m 30s video – touch image to watch & listen

Yesterday at 12:17PM Central time, my brain starting screaming. This morning at 6:29AM Central time somewhere up high over somewhere else, it became so loud that the little boy behind me on my flight in seat 11C must of reached the limit of listening to that deafeningly silent screaming inside my head as he started letting his actual screaming out from the seat right behind me in 10C. For almost the entire 45 minute flight, flying away from something I did not want to leave, he was actually able to let his real screaming all out until a unique, previously unknown, beautiful woman disguised as a stewardess brought him momentary comfort while right at the end of his rope… I would of just chosen a different word to be screaming.

Thank you little screaming boy. Thank you unique, previously unknown, beautiful woman.

150 Years | NY Post

My photograph, portrait really, of Bernard Madoff is again in the mix. I can say with absolute honesty that 150 years still seems like a slap on the wrist.

A friend put it yesterday after he was sentenced, “Glad Bernie got 1.5 centuries in the slammer. Hope it’s self-funded.

Dear NY Post,

I understand the who made what and why is not important to you, but after several publications now, it would be nice if my name was at least spelled correctly.

Sincerely,

for Alexander & His Mum

I received this letter from my friend Alexander yesterday at 2:40PM and have placed it here with his blessing:

Greetings Family & Friends,

I hope you are all well.

I am writing to you today because I need to ask you all a favor. My beautiful mother Isabel Richter is fighting for her life against Large Cell Lymphoma Cancer in Maine at the York Hospital, and as of 2:00pm EST they have begun to administer a very hardcore, industrial strength dosage of chemotherapy. Please send her some prayers, positive vibes, or whatever you feel is appropriate to help her out in this very difficult time. For those that know my mum she is a fighter, and even in her weak condition she is determined to try to beat this cancer. So please, if you have a chance close your eyes for one moment and send some good love to her. She is a wonderful person & I hope that the Lord does not decide to call her just yet. And maybe if you all send some energy she might be able to stick it out a bit longer and try to enjoy the remainder of her life here on earth.

I thank you all for taking the time to read this & appreciate the love & prayers that many of you have already sent and will be sending.

Many thanks,

Alexander

PS- Please let your loved ones know how you feel about them. Family is so fragile and you never know when life will throw you & them into the challenge of your life.

If you are interested. Here is a link to some photo’s of my mother and her battle with cancer.

Photographs above by Alexander.

Michael Jackson Clouds | 8:37:25PM

(15 second video)

Friday, June 26, 2009 | 8:37:25PM | Columbus Avenue & 69th St. | NYC

I recorded the audio in the video above in my cab barely twenty-four hours after Michael Jackson’s heart stopped. The song started as I got in and once underway, the driver turned it up on his own (even louder after I asked him to). I had just left a place playing Michael over the loudspeakers and it would turn out that I would soon arrive at yet another place also playing Michael over the loud speakers, this was not on purpose. It was a really beautiful evening and something I have not experienced too many times. It seemed as if the sky was in agreement with me as I had never seen clouds like this in all my life. Thank you Michael.

Michael Jackson | “Boy” 1994

Thriller was the first record anyone ever gave me. It was a present from my brother one year at Christmas.

Yesterday as I am sure you know, Michael Jackson passed away. Last year, almost to the day, George Carlin passed. I will forever now be nervous every June that someone I have had a photographic connection with will suffer the same fate. Both shoots were life altering yet in very different ways and now my archive is proving to be a place you may not want to find yourself: Carlin, the Madoff affair and now Michael.

I made a series of photographs in a warehouse filled to the rafters with Jackson family belongings on a day in January 2004 that started in sunlight and ended in a blizzard.

The story of what, why and how is too long for this simple note, but the experience of being in that room seemed very similar to the story of Citizen Kane.

An empire discarded and lost being sifted through by strangers for profit, understanding, entertainment and basic human inquisitiveness. It was bewildering and changed the way I looked at the world on more levels then I understand.

The lyrics to “We Are The World” – signed by many of those that sang it, rare sketches of Michael’s, costumes, video props, Neverland Valley keepsakes, sex toys, hand written notes, a Pepsi can with Michael printed on it, an MTV Moonman Award, Michael’s Mowtown ID card from 1970, the pair of Michael’s underwear that was to be later seized by prosecutors and talked about around the globe on news channels and many more small little items of curiosity…. I got to see, touch and photograph them all.

A PDF of The Jackson Collection is available only on request.

I haven’t stopped listening to Michael’s music all night long.

I Am A Stalker

I have known these two women longer then anyone else in my life other then my parents and my brother. One I met the summer of 1991, the other I met just two months later. It has been 18 years now and I have witnessed much of their lives from up close and from afar, photographed both of them as brides and have no idea how to define what they are to me when words like friends don’t seem to cut it. Maybe it’s just two women that sent me links to them running… So let that be a warning, if you send me a link that has a “buy a print now” button for an image of you doing something triumphant – I will more then likely press it.

Archive | Beyond Botox

Beyond Botox | for TIME | New York City

We showed up at the medical office early, I am always ridiculously early, to everything. We sat in the waiting room along with a small number of patients that all seemed to ignore me, my assistant and the large cart of gear. I stared at the fish tank and sat there anxious to get set up or started. Then we got our 15-20 minutes to set up after meeting the two women who agreed to let us photograph their procedure (and who signed releases). To say it was awkward is an understatement but we all had our assigned roles and all was to go smoothly. The room was small, there was the doctor and her assistant, me and my assistant and then the patient. Five of us, all jammed in close around one chair to witness what at least appears to be a simple procedure.

I photographed two procedures, one from pulled back to give a sense of what it was like to be in there and the other shot close for details of the procedure itself. It was really difficult to watch on one level yet on another level, it was really hard to look away. I could imagine the feeling of shot after shot, see the expressions ranging all over the map from the patients faces and then watching through the lens the needles poke and the blood drip, really heightened each prick and drop to an interesting level that at one point, I did look away from. I can remember watching one patient hands during the few moments I looked away, each time I saw her hand clench, I pressed the shutter… then I just had to look again, it was all too important to not witness every moment of, all the while pressing the shutter.

Then it was over. The most amazing part to me was how brave the women were. Not only making the choice to endure the pain, but for allowing us to photograph at all. It’s hard to tell in these two images but I was really close, for most of these images in fact, the patient had to straddle the tripod. So imagine sitting in that chair, imagine the doctor working away with a needle on your skin, imagine the bright medical light in your face, imagine a few extra lights/strobes going on your face and then imagine a tall, big, man between your feet with a giant camera on a tripod, watching it all in great detail… amazing.

* – Archive
I’ve done many wonderful assignments that for one reason or another, have gone under the radar. Be it in the publications the images were created for, or maybe the images worked great in the publication but not for anything else or simply the images just didn’t fit the rest of the work in my portfolio/promotion/whatever at the time. So I now want to share some here. It will always be random and hopefully as interesting as I find them…

CR | A Promise Kept

* – recipient’s name has been removed from the photographs

I made a promise a few weeks ago to send 25 prints to someone. Today, I walked that box of prints to where they work and had it sent up to them in the fancy building and walked away.

I had printed the word fragile on the label. Because of this, the building staff would not accept it and were going to call the recipient down to get it from me. Normally I would applaud this effort however since what I was doing was already awkward enough, (I had not seen or spoken to this person in months, they had no idea this was coming and I preferred it this way) I crossed out the word fragile with a pen. This only led to more chaos. So I now have the signature of the messenger center as having received it, but in what state and if it ever reaches the intended recipient, I’ll never know… I am okay with this.

Shotgun Camera

touch the image above for a 40 second video

2 point & shoot digital cameras | each shot once | 12g | 1300 fps | 1 & 1/8 oz. | 7.5 shot

I shoot competitively in a sport called Sporting Clays and only in sanctioned/regulated tournaments. It is not a commonly known sport but is much like Olympic style skeet/trap shooting in that one uses a shotgun to shoot small clay targets thrown through the air in a very strictly controlled environment. I do not hunt or shoot animals in anyway and my shotgun will never kill anything but these clay targets or as on this one particular day, a couple point and shoot digital cameras. This was done under the watch of a Colonel in the National Guard with a specialty in artillery and on grounds used with the permission of the local sheriff.

While the video is only of one camera and one shot, two cameras were shot that day. Both cameras were actually live with video at the time of the shotgun blast however neither memory card could be located. Three of us searched for approximately thirty minutes to locate and collect all the parts but no memory cards were recovered although between the three of us, about 10 or so ticks collected on us.

I wanted to see what it would look like when a small point and shoot digital camera was hit with a 12g shotgun blast and to see what that camera saw. I will never know what the camera saw as the memory cards were destroyed or otherwise un-recoverable, but what the camera recording the event witnessed, is rather fascinating.

What were once antique trophies of technology and tools of creation will now take on a new life on my shelf of actual trophies. A new collection begins.

If anyone has any old digital cameras you would like to part with and send my way, please do so. My contact info is here. I will trade you an 8×10 print of what it looks like after it gets shot…

12 Digital Point & Shoots

The other day, I had all these on my desk at the same time, I didn’t think much of it until a friend who was visiting started laughing. It wasn’t until he pointed out the absurdity of these eight cameras sitting here that I saw his point. I then told him that there are four I no longer have at all, so really, there have been twelve since 5/9/2003 at 6:30:05. For the record, the same friend that was now laughing at me for these cameras gave me that first one, the one in the top right corner of this image. The first image I made with any of these is below. My actual first digital camera image I made in 1994 or 1995, I don’t have that image but I have one from the second time I used that camera. It is a print out I made that I taped to my dictionary now at least 14 years ago, it is still there today. The first image I made with one of these cameras, the image I made 14 years ago the first time I shot digital and the newest image I have as of writing this are all below.

I can remember thinking how cool it was if only the image quality was there. Today it has reached an interesting point and there are many good things about these cameras. My old film point and shoot was perfect but the cost to scan time ratio is just unbearable, I have yet to be able to say that about any digital point and shoot so I would still not really recommend any of the cameras pictured here. I started taping them up last year as I couldn’t stand all the branding, who needs a subject trying to read the damn logo while you take their picture, who needs yet another photographer constantly eyeballing your camera and dragging me into yet another pointless debate on digital versus film or mega pixels or whatever, who needs another camera trying to jam too many MP and features into to ever odder cameras, I just couldn’t couldn’t care less lately. Get the best camera you can afford and is the closest to the features you wish it had and go use it. I am still in “do the best with what is available” mode with these things. I have one just for videos and another just for stills. Both have very serious flaws honestly that get in the way of the very tasks they were created to perform. Someday, one of these camera makers will get it correct, I have to hold onto that hope, so close, yet still so far…

1st row left = bent lens barrel array (pulled from pocket while on).

1st row right = display stopped functioning correctly (not my fault).

2nd row left = smashed display (thanks Disney World Big Thunder Mountain Railroad).

2nd row right = flash burnout/upgrade (the flash literally smoked when fired, very cool actually).

3rd row left = dust inside lens – cheaper to buy new camera then repair.

3rd row right = display stopped functioning correctly (not my fault).

4th row left = still functioning as of this post.

4th row right = still functioning as of this post.

Not pictured camera #1 = dust on sensor.

Not pictured camera #2 = Ebay for new model, I wish I had kept it.

Not pictured camera #3 = newer model of #2, actually I returned it as it was not as good previous version.

Not pictured camera #4 = returned to manufacturer for non-working pixel under warranty, only to have that model run out of stock after new models release. New model actually now has less features, the first of many missteps taken by camera maker. Why would one remove features? Sigh.

I purposefully left out names, models and many details as 1) they are obvious if you like cameras in any way at all 2) Until I get free models to test, free models to keep or am otherwise reimbursed or sponsored for the countless $’s I spend on these things, I am content leaving out these details.

5/9/2003 at 6:30:05PM to 5/27/2009 at 10:33:41PM = approximately 6 years, 18 days, 4 hours, 1 minute, 36 seconds and these 12 cameras have made approximately 39,437 images and over 1000 short movies. Roughly 18 pictures a day for 6 years. Thinking about these numbers and what has happen in my life during all this time makes me realize these numbers are quite low and only makes me wish I had made more pictures…

I was visiting some friends in Ohio. I had gone downtown with he and his daughters for ballet practice only instead of ballet, I got to borrow his new camera for awhile. So for that hour, I went for a walk. I had noticed kids were around and tried to be sure I never pointed the camera towards any of them. Then when I came around the corner from a wall I had been photographing, I heard a group of young voices from overhead, “What you taking pictures for?” I thought about it a moment and really didn’t know how to answer them, “I just enjoy it,” I said, only half believing it myself.

“Take our picture!”

So I stepped closer to the wall, guessed the focus (as this camera was manual focus without a rangefinder or TTL focus), guessed the exposure and said, “1, 2, 3…”

They all grinned, I snapped the shutter and they said, “Thanks Mister.”

Then I walked back to ballet practice.

1995 | Rochester

I had first seen her on the porch across the street from where I was photographing. She had been staring at me, watching me walk down the street making photographs. I made sure to not ever point the camera her way, I didn’t want her to think I had taken her photograph. I kinda forgot about her after a few yards, crossed back over the street and kept walking. A few moments later, I heard soft footsteps behind me, only in unison with mine however, if I stopped, so did the footsteps… If I kept walking, there were the soft steps again. When I turned around to look, there she was. She leaned towards me while still keeping her distance and very softly with glee in her voice, she pointed to the Leica and said, “Take my picture.” I raised the camera to my eye, pressed the shutter and smiled at her. She giggled, spun around and happily shuffled back to her porch.

I used to walk around Rochester often and it never failed, even in this photography city, I always got hassled, she was one of the only instances where it actually was the opposite. Usually it was residents but one time I had the police approach me. The officer actually found the entire thing humorous but maybe it was just my behavior upon his approach. He rolled up behind me as I was standing in the middle of a street with my camera pointed at the sky, he was right on my heels and I decided the best idea was to ignore him even though the cruiser was only about twelve inches away. I heard the window go down right next to me and kept trying to pretend he was not there. He actually even said, “Excuse me.” I turned and looked at him while keeping my camera trained on the sky, he then said, “[insert name of photo school].” I looked back up at the sky and said, “Yes.” He smiled and drove away.

File | Madoff on TV | File

It may not be obvious in these photographs, but that silver square there is where my television here in #1RN hides. Right between the filing cabinets and under the work table. The chromes of Madoff sat in the file to the right almost 10 years before they got to be on the television next to them, living again to be seen by millions. Both images on the television in these photographs are mine, the less seen one is now no longer under the radar. The boxes above even contain all the original Polaroids from the Madoff shoot as I never throw anything away, even ones of the stand in.

PBS Frontline did a good show and I was proud to be a part of it… I just wish they had credited me correctly and not aligned my name with a company I have nothing to do with… or, there is another Jonathan Saunders that contributed, there do seem to be too many of us out there.

I am the PBS Closing Evil Icon

I don’t think I will be able to ever fully understand the true weight of what this man has done. A million dollars is too abstract to me, a billion is too abstract for me and honestly, $50 billion is too abstract for us all or we’d be rioting in the streets. Now I find my portrait of Bernard Madoff is coming to be the icon of one of the biggest criminals in history.

I cannot put this all in perspective, I trust PBS FRONTLINE has done a better job of that for me, watch it tonight – it looks very well done, preview it here. It is the clip with the woman in the red dress, my image is 2 minutes in and is the closer.

As Requested by Sidney

A year ago, almost to the day, I was in a relationship and brought her to see my family on a short trip to TX. She met my niece Sidney and then simply due to distance, she never met my niece again.

In one of my first moments in TX with my niece recently she asked why my girl wasn’t with me. I didn’t know how to explain we weren’t together anymore to a 5 year old, so I did my best and a day or two went by without it coming up again.

Then, in the middle of making the image above and out of the blue, Sidney said, “You should send that picture of me to ______.” I said okay. A few minutes later, also without any more discussion on the matter, Sidney also told me I should send a picture of a flower to ______, I said okay and took a picture of the very next flower I saw.

When I got back to NYC, I did as Sidney requested.

Today, May 7th, is Sidney’s birthday… Happy Birthday Sidney.

80 Years & 3 Days

San Antonio Gun Club | April 21, 1929 & April 24, 2009

Eighty years and three days after this image was made, I shot my first ever perfect round of skeet at the San Antonio Gun Club, just where that image so long ago was made, everyone in it trying to do what I had just accomplished in the exact same spot. I did this after my worst day in a competition ever just twenty-four hours earlier and just before beginning the main event at the World English Sporting Clays Championship elsewhere in San Antonio. I also got to shoot two days at the Hill Country Shooting Sports Center, an official United States Olympic Training facility in Kerrville, TX. I was in Texas 8 days, shot 6 of those days, shot 3 competitions at the World’s and attempted to shoot exactly 900 targets by the time it was all over. I met many different people from all walks of life and beliefs from all over the country… and of course, the world – all trying to do just what I was.

for CR on April 13, 2009

I hadn’t been to this area of Brooklyn in years. I was on a walk with JB when I realized I had been here before, this very corner in fact. My friend CR lives here too and I had just never approached this corner from this angle before. I haven’t seen or spoken with CR in months for various reasons I am not sure I understand although CR has been in and out of my life for 18 years now. Last I heard from CR, she was pregnant and quite shy about it, she is due any day now… or about now from what little details I know.

Once I realized this, the gravity of this walk changed. I was worried, I was excited, I was curious, I was jealous. So I made her 25 photographs on this walk on April 13, 2009… A print of each one is in the mail soon CR, this much I promise.

I Am A Webby Honoree

I got an email today at 4:32pm letting me know this site, I Like To Tell Stories, was one of 12 Honorees in The Webby Awards – BLOG-Culture/Personal Category. Among my fellow 12 Honorees: Anderson Cooper, NPR, Top Chef and Cute Overload. I am among greatness and it really feels wonderful. The 5 nominated sites are quite amazing as well, I just explored and added several to my RSS, you should too.

This was not just a photo competition or even a photography only category, it was open to all blogs of a cultural or personal nature. I am truly humbled to have my images and stories included in such a wide open category among so many diverse websites, it really is an amazing thing to realize.

I called my father, emailed a few friends and 2h later, haven’t stopped smiling.

I’d like to thank the Academy (yes, it’s an academy) and everyone along the way that let me photograph them or otherwise let me share my part of their life……

– – –
The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. Denis D | #1RN – Without You #72 | 4/3/09

Knowing Denis will make you a better photographer. Denis is a professor where I went to school and simply showing up to a class at this school or any other school will not teach you anything, I know this as I have seen it happen. I say Denis will make you better because he will put in what you do, then more and then push back appropriately.

I never had a single class with Denis, not even one. I did however go to his critiques – often instead of even showing up to my own classes. I got to know Denis more as a friend as Denis, Dan and I were usually the only ones still printing at 1AM, 2AM or Sunday when everyone else was off wasting time doing whatever, we were locked in F Series around the color print processor, printing and talking pictures… Find people like you or like you wish you were and make prints around each other stopping sometimes to tell each other stories. Better yet, introduce yourself to Denis.

#1RN | Cadence T

Cadence T | #1RN | Without You #71 | 4/2/09

(one minute video)

April 2 is Cadence’s birthday. I didn’t know Cadence until this day and I didn’t know the 2nd was her birthday until she was here and until I was already in the middle of taking her portrait. This made it more important somehow, to both of us, although likely for different reasons that don’t actually matter, the mood shifted and this was a good thing.

She had called me up a day or two before and asked if I would be interested in taking her portrait to which I replied, “Yes, I would be very interested, but only if you are doing this for you and for me and not because of any odd ill intentioned reasoning or to hurt my friend ______.” While I had not met her before or spoken to her before, she and a friend of mine were once in love with each other and now were no longer. This much I did know. He had talked about me and introduced her to my stories, which she now follows even though they haven’t been together for some time now. She assured me it was for her and for me, so obviously I was fascinated to photograph her once this was now out of the way. It seems while she knew the following, I did not… The first time I met our mutual friend, was also April 2nd, the same day I first took his portrait here in #1RN one year ago to the day.

I cannot make this stuff up, this is why I like to tell stories. One of many reasons anyway… as it turns out my connections to my new friend Cadence did not stop here.

About 48h after leaving #1RN, I get another interesting story from Cadence in an email. It turns out she was once photographed by my friend Joshua 13 years ago long before Joshua was even known to me and long since they had forgotten about each other. Only did meeting me and seeing that Joshua was now my friend did this memory spark for her. At some point in 1996, Joshua photographed Cadence in an elevator here in NYC. Although their meeting was brief, Joshua had it in his heart to mail her a print. As is his way still today, he spent hours composing the text on the mailing labels and the text on the included letter on his typewriter… even going on to apologize for the lack of color correction in the print.

This is why I tell stories, this is why I love my friends.

I Want to be Like Mike

Mike was interviewed for a magazine. This magazine wanted to run a photograph with the article. When no existing photographs of Mike were found that were suitable, the magazine informed Mike at 11:38 AM that they did not have the budget to include a photograph of him. At 11:42 AM, just 4 minutes after hearing the budget for the shoot, Mike said he would cover the cost. It should be noted that Mike has nothing to gain from being in this article or this magazine. It should also be noted Mike is already considered one of the best in his field here in New York City, so if you are involved in any accounting irregularities in the securities and financial reporting world, you better hope you never meet Mike.

Mike was more dapper, gentlemanly, enjoyable and well put together then most men who wear suits on television playing the type of man Mike actually is… I want to be like Mike and so should you.

Behind the Glass | Part I

Saturday | March 28, 2009

In the past 24h, everything beautiful has been behind glass. So fragile a barrier, yet quite effective. Earn the treasure this glass protects, simply breaking it will not do… The treasure of images at one show, the works of firepower displayed at another or the words exchanged back and forth on my computer screen with someone now very far away. So much treasure and joy, all so close, all out of reach, all protected by something so invisible.

Anthony’s trophy case(s) – which now include 2 photographs by Jonathan.

I awoke about 2AM after passing out at 7PM after being awake some 36h portfolio/book building and spending about 5h at AIPAD the day before. At AIPAD I managed to accidentally spit water on friends, make awkward small talk with those that I assume would of rather I left them alone and receive a scornful glance from a photographer whose images reduced to me to tears once in high school, now peddle his book booth by booth, looking for some kind of help or love.

I awoke, turned on my computer, read one email I now wish had never come and decided it was time to leave, if only briefly, and focus on something joyfully absurd. I had originally planned to shoot at the NJ State Championships this weekend but after realizing non-residents weren’t going to receive trophies, the economy and other random excuses, I had pulled out of this plan. Well, I figured this would be the perfect place to go on a rainy Saturday after all, spend money I shouldn’t and shoot the preliminary events. They were cheaper, faster and due to a poor camera placement, gave me the chance to show off my butt, which you can see about half way through the video below, just click on the speedometer.

Pride in #’s | part I

This week I got my 1000 target pin. You get a target recognition pin for every thousand registered targets you shoot at in a given year, a pin of honor if you will. This was my third such pin:

2006 = 1700 targets – 1 pin for 1000 targets
2007 = 3200 targets -1 pin for 3000 targets
2008 = 1700 targets – 1 pin for 1000 targets

This gives me pride.

Pride in #’s | part II

This week I also got my SALES AND ROYALTY STATEMENT from a fancy place that not only represents me in some aspect, but also as of this week, now represents photographic legend Annie L in some aspect. One would think this would be a moment of pride in more then a couple #’s too…

Asset Description:

License Fee (in USD):

Now I am not sure, but I am willing to bet that it cost more to generate this statement in regards to me being notified that at some point in the future I may receive a $1.41 of a $4.70 sale that gave someone somewhere the right to use my image for one year in some kind of an outdoor ad.

This gives me pride.

Andrew H (aka What’s the Jackanory?) stopped by on Friday the 13th. I normally don’t put much stock in this day, but oddities were abound here in #1RN this time around. Random modeling light malfunctions, an absurd contract arrival, a flashlight burning ones arse (not what you are thinking) and redundant video making. Of course if this was just anyone stopping by there may not have been such stories all around, my video above or his on his site here. It was a good day. Now back up, back up, back up… there ya go, sit back, relax and watch all the exactly 100 photographs in the order they were created.

Wake Up People

This email blast was forwarded to me today. I found it interesting as my experiences with Madoff images and those requesting them has been a little more unique then most.

The following facts as I have experienced them relate to far more experiences of mine then just the Madoff situation:

Just because an image is online or otherwise easy to come by, does not mean that it is yours to do with whatever you please in anyway whatsoever.

(case in point: me posting this email blast above)

Just because a business wants to use your image online only, does not mean that it should be free.

Just because someplace wants to publish it somewhere in someway, does not mean that it is special enough to be there for free, no matter how special this place thinks it is and tells you they are.

Never before like now has our culture expressed the importance of an images power as the fight for the most unique or most recent of whatever grows more dramatic daily.

(However never before it seems has uniqueness been sacrificed so quickly for a race to the bottom in price point. Quality is out the window nor even considered to effect pricing, if place X has an image and place Y has an image, they should be priced the same right?).

Never before like now have those in need of images tried to convince the creator of these images of their worthlessness while at the same time only wanting them to make a profit.

I had an incident today when I realized something important and it thus helped me make up my mind regarding a potential licensing inquiry… (No, I am not talking about the email I got posted above, although I have to admit, I have gotten offers just as absurd from places we have all heard of).

The guy who hangs the advertising for your magazine/tv show/whatever on the bus that almost hit me today makes more money for hanging that sign on the bus that is promoting your product then the very magazine/tv show/whatever being promoted are even offering me for the actual content of the product you want my image for in the first place.

Wake up people.

This would be a really funny story if it was not all true.

A $50,000 Camera and a Shotgun

A $50,000 Camera and a Shotgun, never go into the woods without them.

I’ve been waiting to make images like these for 2 years. I just never had a camera worthy of the task. For a brief hour or so, I finally got to test one out exactly where I wanted to use one the most. I haven’t felt a camera like that in years, it was wonderful using a ‘real’ camera again. I will make more, I will just need to revisit all 28 clubs I have now been to and get my hands on these cameras more often. It was a good day, sporting clays and big files in Kentucky, you cannot go wrong.

Art of Food | Kentucky

The Art of Food | The Carnegie Arts Center | Covington, KY

“This unique two-week exhibition attracts the art and culinary masters in the area, to create the best art, food and atmospheres. The exhibition opens with a Grand Event to initiate the run of his exhibition. Top chefs from the greater Cincinnati area, fantastic local artists and actors and the public will come together to experience the dynamic way in which food comprises an art form.”

I was asked by a friend to have my 150 Meals in a show he was curating. It was to take place in Kentucky. Before he was even done asking me, I think I had bought a plane ticket. Who wouldn’t want a slide show of any kind in Kentucky?

“Jonathan Saunders likes to tell stories (there’s a puzzled and puzzling portrait of Bernie Madoff on the cover of CONDE NAST PORTFOLIO; for TIME, here’s Bill Gates adjusting his still geeky glasses. With us, he’s sharing 150 Meals. It’s the story of what Jonathan ate. Plate by plate, the story unfolds: Jonathan eats out (a lot) – and he doesn’t always eat his vegetables. Compelling, and weirdly appetizing, these plates leave you yearning for a culinary life (like his) – in New York City, where we too could choose Mexican for breakfast, Indonesian for lunch and Croatian for dinner.” – Kate Gallion

I did well at the event considering it was really just a small sampling of food to taste. I managed to eat about 15 plates (they were small), only drop 3 and walk around with a napkin stuck to the bottom of my shoe for a mere 20 minutes. I like Kentucky.

Gawker, Bag, Me and Mr. Madoff

Two more reasons I like the internet:

Gawker Says:

“One guy making money from the whole Bernie Madoff debacle: the photographer who took some boring photos of Madoff for a Fortune article ten years ago. Suddenly everybody wants to buy those pictures! The lesson: take photos of as many people as possible, because at least a few of them are bound to become famous villains.”

BAGnewsNotes Says:

Visual culture and media is scrambling now to capture and represent the near-depression we’re in. In that net, of course, we can expect a lot of faces of victims and villains. I had several strong and immediate associations to this image given its relationship to current circumstances. Before you click through and see where I went, however, how does the image read to you?

So the past 72h have been interesting…

I got hit with either food poisoning or a stomach flu Friday morning, before I was really even awake.

I then spent the next 3 days on the floor of a very kind persons apartment.

At two moments during the delirium and pain, the New York Times called and asked some questions. I cannot really remember what I said, but reading myself now, it seems I was pretty much right on point.

I Met Madoff

Portfolio Magazine March 2009

Bernard Madoff | October 7, 1999 | New York, NY

I have photographed roughly 450 people on assignments. I always try to make more then one portrait and I always try to make each one as interesting an image as I can.

Not only because it is my nature, not only because it helps the client like me when I give them options and not only because it’s more interesting a challenge in my 400th conference room to top what I did in the last conference room… but simply because sometimes you just never know or understand what it turns out someone you photographed so many years ago was really doing or up to and who may want to see those images again someday. Whatever the reason maybe.

#1RN | Audrie L

I was nervous to take Audrie’s portrait, after a year or two of pleading, she finally made it over to #1RN.

I shot 167 images (she is laughing in 139) in 15m 12s.

February 2nd, 2009

3 Years of Clays

In 2006, the year I started competing, I shot 1700 registered targets. I shot in everything I could and eventually got demoted to the absolute bottom, E Class.

In 2007, I shot 3200 registered targets. I shot in everything I could and more, 35 tournaments that year with Nationals being the only focus. I went from E Class up to C Class, but fell short in my quest to place in any event at Nationals. At Nationals I even placed 11th in one event that went to 10th, all in C Class.

In 2008, I shot 1700 registered targets and 6,860 total. I didn’t expect to shoot much this year, but for varying reasons and all last minute, I ended up at some Big Blast tournaments (more competitors, more $, better trophies, harder targets). I went from C Class to B Class. I then made it to Nationals again. Only this year, I was 14th of about 200 in both the MAIN event and 5 STAND, 2 of the 3 events I entered. All in B Class, a harder division then 2007.

My personal, engraved Nationals trophy finally made it to #1RN. It only took 3 years and 6600 registered targets.

I have 3 of the 8 punches I need for A Class. I have zero plans and goals for this year. (so far).

I keep a clay target from each day that I shoot, competition or practice. On that clay I write the date, location and number of targets attempted. I have 142 here, and the pieces of about 8-10 targets I knocked over that were my first, so about 150 days of shooting.

9/2005 – 11/2008, according to the records on my clays, I have shot 17,332 targets.

A few years ago while visiting my grandmother, I realized I was surrounded by Bunnies. Since for one reason or another, we never end up there long, I ran around as fast as I could and tried to take a picture of as many of them as possible.

I visited for Christmas this year and realized that now in addition or sometimes in place of the bunnies, there are now Santas. If you look really close, you can see Santas with bunnies.

Censored

I’ve been testing a few publish on demand places. One such place uses a great quote:

“Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one.”
— A.J. Liebling

Well they made it clear this week, they own their press, not me and that I cannot borrow theirs like it was mine. My latest project test was removed without discussion before it was ever printed or proofed.

It was a private project just for me and the subject. Not for sale, display or viewable to anyone besides me and the printer.

This didn’t matter.

They own the press, they made this incredibly clear.

Sigh.

$50 Billion | Bernard Madoff

I photographed Bernie October 7, 1999 for a business magazine. It was one of the first portraits I ever made on assignment.

Today, at 8:30am, Bernie was arrested by the FBI and was set to be released this afternoon on a $10 million bond.

The charge? $20-$50 BILLION in Securities Fraud. Yes, Billion.

Bernie was once even chairman of the NASDAQ.

Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC
on their website:
“In an era of faceless organizations owned by other equally faceless organizations, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC harks back to an earlier era in the financial world: The owner’s name is on the door. Clients know that Bernard Madoff has a personal interest in maintaining the unblemished record of value, fair-dealing, and high ethical standards that has always been the firm’s hallmark.”

by Bernie’s own admission via the AP:
Madoff told employees he was “finished,” that he had “absolutely nothing,” that “it’s all just one big lie” and it was “basically, a giant Ponzi scheme,” according to a criminal complaint in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

via the WSJ/NYT:
The disclosure came after Mr. Madoff tried to distribute early bonuses to employees of his firm, (approximately $200 million to $300 million to “certain selected employees, family and friends.”) prompting questions by senior employees, a person familiar with the situation said. Mr. Madoff, 70 years old, allegedly told employees he had a couple of hundred million dollars left and wanted to distribute it before turning himself in to authorities, this person said.

Riggi | Cincinnati Magazine

John Riggi | Silver Cup Studios – set of 30 Rock | August 13, 2008
John is the co-executive producer of 30 Rock, is from Cincinnati and has been involved in Family Guy, the Larry Sanders Show and Will and Grace. He’s a smart and funny dude obviously. It was a good day, despite the challenges of being on a set where we couldn’t really touch or move or plug in or turn on anything.
We got off one lit shot then the union found us, or more accurately, a different union guy said no after the first one said yes. I thought we got them on our side with Riggi’s pull to turn on the studio lights for shot #2, but no dice. We were done. It would of been a beautiful shot in this spot. All that gear is all the TV stuff, one light on a stand is all I did or needed, mixed with all those different light sources, that color would of been beautiful. I didn’t even need to touch that diffusion, it was all as if it was set up for me. Turn on the lights please. It just wasn’t meant to be so I went with no lights at all.

Reminding me why I rambled about the shoot in an email with the magazine, I got another bio:

I Don’t Really Even Drink.

On 10/24/08 – 10/25/08 between 11:30PM and 2:30AM, 3 people randomly dropped in here at #1RN. The pattern of the evening seemed to be visit Jonathan, bring beer, drink beer, get your picture made and then go on with your night. I am okay with this. (Unless they are drinking in order to tolerate me, but I don’t think that is the case, at least in these…).

People rarely come by, but when they do, it is sometimes grouped together randomly in one day or all within a few hours. I am okay with this too, even more so when they overlap. Random 1, 2, 3.

Easy to overlook, but I was 14th of 175 competitors in the National Sporting Clay Championship earlier this month (B Class). Well, I called to find out when I would be getting my prize today only to have it arrive in the mail about 30 minutes later. I have been wearing it all day since ripping it out of the envelope in my hall. Not everyone gets one like in some sports, it has to be earned. I get to choose the real prize, a $30 gift card, 4 boxes of ammo (cannot be shipped to NYC, worth about $40) or a trophy of my choosing. The coaster was easy to rule out, but the the other 3 options, I just don’t know, other then wanting them all for varying reasons of silly to serious, I just don’t know which trophy will be best on my shelf…

Who Would Ever Sing About A Sensor.

Kodachrome only has one lab left in the whole world. Thankfully someone made a video and at least took note. I don’t envision Paul Simon singing about a sensor or a Larry Towell Leica Song to become singing about his Canon anytime soon…. even if someone someday does, it just wouldn’t be the same and while Mr. Simon and Mr. Towell are still quite admirable, whoever does sing about that sensor, you wouldn’t want to be friends with.

Kodachrome with a Leica is still one of the most beautiful things I have ever made that I can hold in my hand. If you don’t understand this statement, you better hurry and give it a try.

Larry has some thoughts too in this sample I hope I don’t get sued for sharing:

Shooting Safety Lesson.

Anthony Matarese Jr. | Part 1.

I have done many silly things to get a photograph: I have been hit with police batons, I once (accidentally) banged my head into a police baton that was being held stationary by the police at an entirely different event, I have dangled over the edge of a 20 story office building, I have placed lights (tied down) too close to edge of another office building, I have forgotten the super conductor I was photographing is a large magnet only to have some gear be sucked right in, same goes for an MRI room yet a different day and many more countless and forgotten foolishness. Yet today, when I did this, I never gave it a second thought. I know this place, I know shotguns and I know if there was anyone in the world that wouldn’t shoot me in this situation, it’s Anthony. Yet today when I sat down and made this little 2 minute movie, seeing just what was going on from a slightly different point of view, I wondered just how smart I really am…? (not worried once, not even just a little).

When shooting someone shooting, make sure they have a serious championship victory under their belt, or like Anthony, several victories.

San Francisco 903 | 1.

I rented an SWC903 for 48h in 1997. I was broke, bored, lonely and the rental barely fit on the credit card back then. I still want one as I still want a handful of other specialty cameras. I shot outdated chrome film I got from the trash with one of the most expensive cameras out there at the time. A few years later that film got processed for free by a girl I crushed on at a magazine. This week, 11+ years after making the them, I sat down for the first time and looked at the negatives and made a few scans.

She Smiled at Me.

She smiled at me.

I had just gone through the TSA check in San Antonio. I sat down, put my shoes back on and started walking to the food court to look for breakfast. That’s where and when I first saw her. I saw her red hair and heavy makeup first, that’s what got my attention, then it was her face, she was really cute. Honestly, that’s what really caught my attention first, if we were to ever meet, a crush would be likely. She was leaning forward and eating a bagel or donut offered up to her by who I assumed to be her boyfriend. It was a simple yet intimate moment. It made me smile a little inside. I walked by them a second time after getting my food and that’s when it caught my eye why he was holding her food out like that for her, both her arms were missing from just above the elbows down and the scars looked really new. She couldn’t have been more then 25. Her boyfriend looked about the same age and the bags they had were mostly military. It hit me as I kept walking like a punch in the face. What I thought was a romantic and playful simple moment was in fact something else while still potentially being the same. My eyes started welling up with tears. I kept walking, trying to not let them out as I walked to my gate.

It was the second time in 24h I did this. While competing in clays, I noticed a trapper had a Segway. I walked over and gave it a bunch of close looks as I had never seen one like this or seen one up close. It was just sitting there, parked and ready for action. I wanted one instantly. The trapper was a young kid, shaved head, polite and speaking with my squad mate already about something else. As I got closer I realized I hadn’t even noticed his left leg was entirely gone, it was simply a silver pipe with gold hinges for a knee. That’s when I put it together with the news I had seen months ago about some new veterans getting Segway’s during their recovery.

I felt really foolish at first but then decided I’d rather be a fool then live in a world where I assume people are missing their limbs from war because they have a Segway or a romantic boyfriend.

Now I was sitting in a rocking chair by the gate in San Antonio, waiting for my flight. She walked by with her boyfriend and I wondered where they were off to. Was it home, was it a vacation, was it her first time out of San Antonio and its hospitals?

Now sitting on my flight in the aisle seat, getting hit with bag after bag as everyone filed on, I looked up as one bag all the sudden had a cat in it I could see through the mesh. The cat was scared and starring at me, as I leaned in for a closer look at the poor cat, the next bag hit me, I looked up and there she was again. “Sorry,” she whispered as she smiled at me when our eyes met and then down the aisle she went, cats in bags and boyfriend in tow.

I walked out of the bathroom at LaGuardia after being one of the first off the flight. There were people all around and it was really crowded in the terminal. As I stepped over some bags and through the crowd to get to baggage claim, I saw her again for the last time. I hadn’t even realized she was on my flight to NYC as well. She was bent down and wrestling with her bags with what was left of her arms. I think she was actually just talking to the cat, but I’ll never be sure. As I went down the last set of stairs, I tried to not let the tears out all over again.

14th, 14th and 85th.

NSCA National Sporting Clays Competition in San Antonio, Texas.
October 27 – November 3, 2008.

My second year going to Nationals, same goal, top ten in one event in my class, just one. Seems simple right? It is not, it is one of the farthest things from simple I have ever tried. Over 1400 shooters from all over America and beyond converged to battle it out over a 75 target green, yellow, red and orange course for 300 targets in 4 days, plus side events. I shot this MAIN event, the Krieghoff Cup and 5 Stand. Last year I fell short and walked away almost crying with an 11th in the K-Cup in C Class. This year, I am in B Class, a step up making my goals even harder. I saw many other B Class shooters this time around. College students on teams with real coaches and sponsors, guys that work in the shotgun business and range owners. Here I was a jackass that lives in Times Square and only gets practice twice a month in a good month, showing up to battle it out with the lofty goal of top ten in B Class…. classic.

When all the dust, drama, roller coaster rides of performances and grudge match shootouts were over, I was:

14th of 162 in the MAIN, prizes to 15th
I get an award and 1 punch (1 point towards A Class)

14th of 117 in the 5 Stand, prizes to 10th
No award, but 1 punch (1 point towards A Class)
8th-14th had the same score of 83/100, all ties receive same punch as 8th place.

85th of 163 in the Krieghoff Cup, prizes to 10th
No excuses and no comment.

All above results are in B Class.

When competing, shooters are randomly put on a squad of 5, unless you know 5 people and go together. Being just me, I was shuffled into the mix. I have to say, I got an AWESOME squad. They loved shooting and kept me from totally losing my mind when I did poorly and cheered when I did well. I would not have had the scores or fun I had if it had not been for meeting and shooting with them. So BIG thanks to Carlo, Jacqueline, Theresa and Dan. That’s Carlo FIOCCHI by the way in the red vest, just like the sign we are standing with. I was the only non FIOCCHI family or employee on the squad. Carlo hooked me up with a hat, stickers and patches. I even won 2 boxes of ammo in their raffle. I am now an even bigger fan of FIOCCHI then ever before…

Still shocked, amazed and stoked I got 14th in the MAIN. Already dreaming up belt buckle designs to order for myself in celebration, to me, it’s that big a deal.

Before each event, I would arrive early and relax in the parking area waiting my turn to start. Here are two views from two different days in one minute of what it sounds like from the parking areas when the Green, Yellow, Red, Orange, 2 different FITASC, 2 different 5 Stand, sub-gauge and multiple practice courses are all under way.

Billy Ray Cyrus II.

Billy Ray Cyrus | July 8, 2008 | Tennessee.

Shot for People Magazine, more of the story here, but this is from the back up. The larger the situation or shoot, the more I try to back myself up, no matter how simple. I set myself up to make it so I never come back with nothing, even if all gear goes down, never leave with nothing at all costs. Now I have never had this happen, but the joy in my little system is that months later when I finally sit down and look at the film or scan it, that joy of seeing the magic that was film is back, if only for a moment.

After the first shot was wrapped and before the wardrobe change for the second, I shot 10 frames as fast as I could on one roll. This was frame #1.

i like how small the internet makes the world. my stories #1 and #2 are now in australia. months ago i got an email from robert, who somehow or another found my site and kept reading, even sent a nice note a few times.

then when i did stories, he asked for one. the printer cannot ship out of the USA directly yet, so robert asked if i would send him one each and we worked it out on our own. i waited till #2 was ready and shipped them.

it took them about a month to arrive. i had asked him to take a snap of the envelope when they arrived as i am still oddly fascinated by mail and the way it looks upon arrival, more so internationally. today this photo arrived of robert holding my envelope, courtesy of his wife…

Atlantic Flyway Tournament.

sometime saturday i decided to try and make it to hopkins in kennedyville, MD on sunday for a one day competition in preparation for nationals. i needed the practice and had never been to hopkins, a staple of sporting clays, it would now be my 27th club. i reserved one of the last cars in nyc and tried to go to bed early. 2 movies later, countless games of solitaire and a few hours looking at your internet, i walked to get the car. another 3h drive and competition on no sleep, none.

awake 30h now, i arrive, warm up, eat, hit the course. i only had one bad station, missed 4 of 6, all me getting in my own way, same for every target missed today, all breaks in focus. the ones that made me nervous, i broke them all, it’s the ones i took for granted i missed.

82 of 100. a good day as score cards look best all X’s. 2nd of 13 in B Class. $ won and my first ‘punch’ or ‘point’ towards moving into A class, only 5 punches more to go. oh yeah, i also got my first plaque, jealous?

I Am Officially Sponsored for Nationals.

in 2007 nationals was a vison quest (yes, said with a wink) but i had a true chance, at least for the goal of top ten in my class. in one of the two events i was after, i was 11th. in 2007 i shot in 29 competitions leading up to nationals and took 14h of lessons, this year: 9 competitions and 2h of lessons.

i accomplished my goal of the year (moving up one class) back in april. then i pretty much quit. now without practice or the proper mental training, it could be another seminole cup or states catastrophe. yet the wheels are now turning. in 17 days, 13 hours, 20 min and 24 seconds, the first day of the four day competition begins.

for TIME – Heroes of the Environment 2008

Kevin Conrad challenged the U.S., the sole holdout on a plan for a post-2012 climate treaty. “If, for some reason, you’re not willing to lead, leave it to the rest of us,” he declared. “Please, get out of the way!” Within minutes, the U.S. backed down. The resulting “Bali Action Plan” provides a road map for an international climate treaty that will succeed the Kyoto Protocol. – TIME

154 Day Wait.

i have been waiting to see this since april 20th. i shot the FITASC and a prelim and then left for the weekend. turns out my FITASC score held on for first by one target. this win bumped me up into B class.

went down to M&M today to get it, well, that and shoot another tournament. i had no idea what it look like all this time, i just knew they said mailing it wasn’t a good idea. so i waited. it was a hard wait, i love winning trophies. it seems they are getting odder and odder too. the large events have some super crazy trophies, so it is for those i practice. someday, someday…. a belt buckle, a bronze buffalo, an eagle in full scream on a wood base…. PULL.

16th Annual Delaware River Classic.

my 3rd time shooting the same event, first one i have done 3 times since i started 3 years ago. i went to get a trophy from the spring, but figured i should just shoot the competition as well. not ready, haven’t been shooting enough, but since the car was free and shells were long ago bought, sure, let’s do it.

did the MAIN and the FITASC. surprise, i got 4th in FITASC, just like last year and just like in almost all my major tournaments, i am in the first position that gets no money/trophy. if it goes to 5, i get 6, if it goes to 3, i get 4. clockwork, this has happen in over 10 events, including being 11th when it went to 10th in the K-Cup at Nationals.

6th of 24 in the MAIN, B class. i am a class higher now, so fine, didn’t expect much. i wanted to get an 80 or higher. i got my 80. second highest one day tournament score ever. i’d have to call this a good day, no $, no trophy, but a good day.

2 Shows in a Week.

my image, los angeles.

in the past week, i have been to two photography exhibits. i left both feeling a little kicked in the balls (in the bad way) after i was really excited to see one and kinda interested in the other, both for really different reasons but i went to both with an open mind and much excitement.

the first, at a major museum you have heard of showing a wonderful photographer you have certainly heard of. the show was dark and dramatically lit, which i liked. however if images are to be displayed in a dark or dramatic fashion, one or at least i, would think extra attention would be paid to how the images look in such an environment. this didn’t seem to be the case. cheap, highly reflective and warped plexi was used and i spent the show looking at the awful and warped reflections instead of the image in the frame itself. this wasn’t even the worst part. the plexi was so awful, that even viewing the images from across the room, what should of been a nice rich black in the photograph appeared purple. well done fancy major museum, i paid full price and you gave me half a show that if it weren’t for your piss poor display techniques, otherwise would of been great to see.

the second, which i promised myself i wouldn’t write about or mention to anyone, is now keeping me up as i just cannot believe what i saw and really couldn’t keep a secret if my whole life was on the line, i just cannot do it. (i really hope i am mistaken somehow for the record, but i think i am on target as i spent a lot of time and thought on this at the show).

it was a nice show, i would of been proud to have a show in the space if i was ever so fortunate and the crowd was happy and thick. i didn’t buy the book, but i was impressed at all the hard work and accomplishment of making it all happen, well done, truly. yet as i was waiting for friends, i peeked the book again. it just so happen there was an image right above the reception desk that was also in the book. i first looked at the reproduction in the book as it was done by a publisher you have certainly heard of and i wanted to see the quality since the print and book were only feet apart from each other. the reproduction was decent, but i could see differences. then it hit me, this is a different crop, no wait, the perspectives are a little different. no, it must just be a different crop. the image was relatively abstract so it was hard to see at first, so i kept studying it and looking at shapes around the edges. then it hit me again, the image is upside down. so i spun the large book around 180 degrees, yup, that’s it. either the image on the wall or the image in the book is upside down.

i couldn’t believe it. the perspective leads me to believe that not only is the image upside down in the book, it is a different crop as well. the different crop wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, but upside down, i just cannot find the words for, other then of course, wow, do i hope i am wrong. if i am wrong and if it still seems i could be so certain something is a miss, it’s still not a good thing. my only theory is that since its abstract, the only abstract in the project and not next to the print that often, the publisher/photographer didn’t even notice, liked it better upside down or couldn’t/wouldn’t reprint the book… or i am just wrong, but… um, ?

Mr. Witten.

so last night i was watching good will hunting, sitting there thinking i should take a crack at ‘fine art math’ simply because the idea of such a thing seems about as top tier thinking that may exist, not to mention the shear beauty of the words ‘superstring theory’ and whatever it is that must look like, i bet its beautiful. all this appealed to me. that is as far of course as these thoughts went, it took me 14 years to get a BFA, that should tell you right there about my abilities with math.

in the film, the prize of Field’s Medal was tossed around. i thought it was made up as i don’t tend to know science awards as well as i know other random information. i am of course quite wrong i discovered today in researching and fact checking a man i photographed a few years ago that got requested from my library today. i remember going to the ‘Institute for Advanced Study’ and thinking it almost all seemed made up, i mean really, are people this intelligent?

they are, well, this man is, mr witten. he won the fields medal in 1990, the first physicist to win the prize. i knew the gravity of the man when i photographed him, but still, glad i didn’t read too much before hand, sometimes it’s not good to know exactly how much smarter then you someone is. not at first.

Andy Adams.

Andy Adams is FLAK Photo.

I only ‘met’ him a few weeks ago, even though I have watched the site for months.

Got back from LA and it just so happen he was in town so I invited him over for a portrait, he agreed. It’s a random world, this is why I like to tell stories.

I have now photographed 58 people for With Out You.

FLAK.

Flak Photo & Andy Adams & another reason to love the internet.

a few months ago i came across flak photo. i don’t remember how, i am sure it was from looking at something somewhere and following a link from there to flak, or there to there to there to flak. either way, it then got added to the feed of 70+ that i read everyday.

i delete more feeds these days then i add, it should be the opposite. lately more and more feeds/sites are linking only what they found elsewhere and claiming it as their discovery or that they saw it first or they take credit for seeing it months ago when whatever it is hits more mainstream. nevermind that whatever is discussed is not their work or creation, it’s just something they saw online and relinked. i could never relate to this. there are fine lines to me about being a creative curator so to speak of good/smart/interesting work and just relinking what was found on another site many of the people reading your site also subscribe to. the noise out there was getting loud, repetitive or otherwise uninteresting.

what got me into flak is that it is exactly as it should be, a place where images/photographers are celebrated and shared without all the noise, condescending attitudes or one-upmanship so prevalent in sites that are about photography. while familiar with some of the work and unfamiliar with much more, it is all presented in a sensible pleasing way. a new image everyday is shared, links to books, shows, smart photographers, it’s all there in a way that is not only respectful of the work, it celebrates it in a way only the internet can share it. all done by a guy named andy in wisconsin who obviously loves photography as much as i do or anyone reading this does.

a couple months after i started reading flak, i got an email one day out of the blue. it was an invitation from andy to share something or make an ad for my stories vol. II. turns out he’d been watching my site as i had been watching his. the internet is as small as it is large so it turns out. i was impressed, flattered and got right on it. i made 8 banners and let him choose which he wanted, it’s up there now, go peek.

HaHa MOFTB.

Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting – New York City.

all i needed was to put a light on stand outside in NYC. just one. tripods are now called a ‘hand held device’ and do not require a permit. however, if that same tripod holds some sort of light device and not a recording device, film or still, you need a permit and $1,000,000.00 of insurance.

there is no still photography permit for this, you need a motion picture permit for your one light on a stand outside in NYC, your proof of $1,000,000.00 of insurance, a ‘key to city’ signed agreement and a form stating where you’d like to put this one stand with a light on it outside in NYC. all typed, all info in the correct box/space/form. one mistake, you must start over.

i need to put a light on a stand soon outside in NYC so i did it all, handed it in and was told to come back in 20 minutes. i gave them over an hour and went back. there was a problem, in all these pages of questions and filled out boxes, there was no space or question or line item where i was asked or instructed to inform them of my need for this one light outside on a stand in NYC, therefore, according to all this paperwork and trouble, i don’t need a permit. while filling out my motion picture permit forms for the second time i was surrounded by production professionals working for actual films and tv shows you all have heard of while i filled out the same papers they were for my one light on a stand outside in NYC.

i was then instructed that i was suppose to state my need for a light on a stand outside in NYC on the form where it asked me the address of the shoot. how i was suppose to know this is quite unclear.

also unclear, why the need for a permit at all, they are free. never mind all the other serious flaws in the entire process or why a camera on a tripod doesn’t need a permit but a light on a tripod outside in NYC requires $1,000,000.00 of insurance.

odd side note, the office is above david letterman’s studio and thank goodness, 2 blocks east and 1 block north of my home.

taking a picture outside on a street with one light on stand in NYC should not be this hard.

Hordes & SK on a Thursday.

the first thursday night of september, the mob had found josef. it wasn’t expected, at least by me. i had been to the space before to see him talk, it was sparse. now, for a show/book of older work, it was a horde and it was worthy and overdue. the mob made the actual viewing of work pointless, yet everyone and myself were glad to be there, slammed together in the heat, watching each other more then the images on the walls, everyone just stared at that out of the corners of their eyes while they searched for the next friend or contact among the random photo loving faces in the crowd. everyone there seemed to know someone else there or someone they wanted to know. we all peeked around for josef, then acted like seeing the recluse in person wasn’t as special as it was once we got our peek.

SK found me in the crowd, i hadn’t seen her since her birthday or even had a call or email returned since that night either. she said hello briefly, quietly and then vanished into the horde.

i got a smuggled beer from friends, drank it down only for the story of it all and stepped upstairs for another show.

SK found me there again. somehow or another, i talked her into coming over for a portrait.

i always welcome september, year after year.
